28 May 2012 @ 12:32 pm
Well, hello, hello to one and all!  It has been an incredibly (re: unforgiveably) long time since I've posted or been very active with all of you fine and talented folks.  Lots of stuff has been going on -- both for me personally and around here, from what I've noticed.  Some of it has been for the good.  Some of it for the not so good.  But it's still a lot of stuff happening, and when lots of stuff starts happening at once things tend to get a little crazy.

So why don't we give all that crazy the bird and have a little fun with a Mini Contest, eh?

I love Mini Contests.  I love them because they're a break from the usual affairs, but they can also be challenging as hell.  Challenges make me happy, in a gleeful sadomasochistic sort of way.  I hope you all like challenges as well, because that's what I'm about to give you.

Several months (or maybe it's closer to a year?) back I'd challenged some of my writer friends to push themselves out of their usual sandbox.  Every writer has an area they're more comfortable with, something that they are particularly known for.  I don't care how much a writer claims that they have no genre, no particular style, that they morph to fit the story.  Every writer has something unique to them, something that defines a work as theirs.

Your challenge this week is to write AGAINST your norm.  Break your own rules and boundaries.  Experiment with styles, subjects, and techniques outside your comfort zone.  And then you will present these entries to the community so that we can go, "Whoa, ______ wrote THIS?!?!"

Sounds easy, right?  For some people, this will be.  To fix that, and because this is the last contest I'll be hosting and I intend to have fun with it, I am also offering an ADDITIONAL challenge for those willing to take it on.  The additional challenge comes in the form of a prompt.  And that prompt is:
I am an anachronism.

This prompt MUST be used to START AND END your entry.  Meaning, the first and last lines must be this prompt.  You may use it as a quote.  You may change the tensing and the pronoun, so it can be "she was an anachronism" or whatever, but the rest of it MUST appear in tact.  You have no other limitations other than to push yourself.  Write something that makes you uncomfortable or at least unusual for you.  If you write poetry, try prose, and if you write prose try your hand at poetry.  Play with format and punctuation.  Basically, try NOT writing like yourself.

Your entries are due by Sunday, June 3rd at 8 PM.  A poll will go up and voting will start.  The winner of this challenge will get a personalized banner and icon set, made by yours truly.

I'm very excited to see just how far outside the sandbox you all will go.  Good luck, and remember: have fun with this, because I'm sure as hell gonna have fun reading what you all come up with.  Cheers, folks!

Good evening! Welcome to the March 2012 Mini Contest!

This time around, writers were to select an entry from a list compiled of previous Flame submissions. Their next step was to re-write the entry, putting their own spin or changes into it - a remix! These changes could include POV, circumstances, environment, or any number of other elements. The remix DID, however, have to still stay true to the intent of the original story.

As mentioned in the first Mini Contest post, the winner of the Mini Contest will receive a prize! I can now reveal that the winner will get a choice of either:

  • An Amazon gift voucher to the value of 10 GBP, to spend on whatever you like!
So that's what you're battling it out for! Good luck, everyone. :) Submissions are open until Thursday 5pm EST!

Hi, Flamers! Thank you to the sixteen members who came forward and offered their past entries for remixing. :) I must now stress that those submissions are closed. I won't accept any more entry submissions to be remixed.

Below is the list of entries to choose from for this mini contest. You must choose one entry - not one of your own! Remember: characters and plot should remain the same, but you are free to change small details, genre, motivations, dialogue, format, or anything else that will transform the piece from the original style to yours. Experiment with your reinterpretation. As long as the remixed entry is recognisable, we will accept it.

Don't forget to make a note on your entry which one you're remixing!

Our first Mini Contest of the year is something very different! The meaning behind the ‘remix’ title is this: competitors will be rewriting past entries of other members, keeping characters and content intact but free to change stylistic details, setting, format, and myriad other elements that will transform the entry to your personal style.

For example, if the entry you choose to remix includes a character called Shirley who dies, you must also write about a Shirley and her death – but it could be presented in a poem, or it could happen in a different time and place to the original entry, or you can adjust the dialogue to give it a different spin. As long as your remix is obviously derived from the source entry, we will accept it.

As usual nowadays, the winner of the Mini Contest will receive a prize! More information on that will be released later.

A regular submissions poll will be going up at the end of this week, but first we need a list of potential entries to remix! These are the past entries that competitors will choose from as their ‘prompt’. Anyone is welcome to submit an entry for remixing; doing so does not mean you are obliged to remix someone else’s.

Please comment on this post with a link to one of your past entries that you are happy to have remixed by another member. Ensure that the entry is Public, and please include word count, format, and trigger information as well. I will keep a list in this post, so that anyone who would like to remix an entry for the Contest can peruse and pick one, ready for the submission poll!

Go ahead and ask any questions you may have, as well!

Your Week 4 prompt is...
Vestige

An appropriate word, perhaps, "vestige" is defined as a mark or trace of something no longer in existence. Will your characters end here, having left their mark on our minds and hearts? Or will they insist upon remaining, to remind us that we need them?

Reprisal

Are your characters in the mood for some good old fashioned revenge? Maybe they're facing down consequences for crimes committed in the distant past? Perhaps their stories are intricate webs of blood and guts, or, heartwrenching cries for justice. Whatever the motive behind your deeds, please don't make us wait to be served cold dishes.

My sincerest apologies to everyone that had extra stress added to their lives attempting to submit to the original All-Stars Week 2 poll. The problem is a mystery me, and thus, the solution. So, I am reposting, with a correct textbox length and adding one hour to the entry deadline. The original "Transcendent" prompt poll will be closed. Please don't hesitate to contact me if any other problems arise.

Your Week 2 prompt is...
Transcendent

Defined as "extraordinary, superior", this gorgeous word's synonyms include, "preeminent", "sublime", and "ultimate". Such pretty adjectives... but are they the sort of words your characters reserve for memories held dear? Will they soon stumble upon an experience that could be described as transcendental? Or, perhaps "The Transcendentalists" come to mind... Emerson, and Thoreau, etcetera?

The Week 1 Prompt is ...

ERUDITION

Erudition is defined as both "higher education", and "deep, extensive learning". These definitions may imply knowledge gleaned from great books in a formal venue, however, your character(s) could very well be striving for enlightenment at the side of a spiritual mentor, or getting a degree in human foibles while attending the school of hard knocks. Have their instructors been carefully selected or forced upon them? Have their initial goals been drastically altered by external influences or by a shocking, personal revelation? Is ignorance a bliss they regret losing, or do they crave endless instruction? Tell us their story.

In a very unlikely upset, one challenger who only submitted for one day beat out all five of those who submitted every day! It was a tight race, but [info]hwango still managed to pull out ahead. Congratulations!

However, for the five contestants who brought stamina and determination to the table:

Congratulations to our brave five who made it through five days: [info]bluegerl, [info]mermaidbia, [info]missflyer, [info]niliwen, and [info]urb_banal! I will have your icons for you by the time this poll has a winner.

Without further ado, to the voting! 29 entries from 8 hopeful entrants, all vying for the top spot. Don't forget: the winner will receive one handmade item of their choice: hat, scarf, small crocheted friend, set of bookmarks, or home-baked cookies (probably best if that's only for USA, though, what with shipping across borders?). Or something else you can think of that you want that I can make for you. :)

Sorry for the doublepost, anyone who noticed. Sliiiiiiiiiiiight HTML fail. In the middle of the poll. (There is a reason Carole is the pollmaster around here, not me.)

It's still the 24-Hour Mini Contest! Details on the contest can be found on Monday's post. This is your last chance to get into the final voting poll - and the winner will receive one handmade item of their choice: hat, scarf, small crocheted friend, set of bookmarks, or home-baked cookies (probably best if that's only for USA, though, what with shipping across borders?). Or something else you can think of that you want that I can make for you. :)

Just a quick reminder that these entries are not offered formal edits or ROAR volunteers, but you'll still have people read and review when the final poll goes up tomorrow night!

Day 5: Yellow

For a color so closely related to the bold red, yellow certainly has a bad reputation - someone who is yellow-bellied is a coward. A yellow tint to the skin can be a sign of bad liver health. (I was a yellow baby until my mother left me in a patch of sun all day to help cure that. Then I was a painful red sunburn of a baby.) And yet, a bright yellow sun is a fixture of happy children's paintings everywhere.
