It's that time again ...
A dinosaur stands in the middle of a town square; city hall sits in the background as the dinosaur eats an athlete rather unceremoniously and wreaks havoc with the sort of grace only a dinosaur can manage.

NOMinations: July-October, 2010

For new members and those who need a refresher, we hold NOMinations every few months in recognition of the outstanding and fantastic things our members do on a regular basis.

What can I NOMinate members for?

There are four categories to our NOMinations:
  • Best editor -- Which of our fine team of editors deserves recognition for their undying efforts to help you improve your writing?
  • Best feedback -- Who stops in to encourage you and your muse time after time, piece after piece?
  • Member's choice -- For recognition of all-around awesomeness.
  • Most improved -- This is a great way to recognize our writers who may not be at the top of our polls, but who are working as hard as they can to become the best writer they can be -- just as much as it is a way to recognize any of our popular authors who have striven to detail their work with every keystroke.
Full descriptions of each category and a complete FAQ on NOMinations can be found here. If you're still confused, check out the last NOMinations post!

How do I NOMinate a member?

Simply post here with a comment! In your comment, you should include:
  • The award you'd like to nominate the person for
  • The username of the person who would receive the award and any alternative usernames they might be known under. (To make names easy to see, please try to highlight using the username code -- <lj user=username goes here> -- or else bold each username.)
  • Why you feel that this person is the best choice for the nomination, including what they've done in the past, how they've done it, and why you feel that was admirable.
You may also wish to include:
  • Any personal notes/anecdotes about the member.
  • Any links to examples that you'd like to include to support your NOM.
Each nominee must receive an initial nomination, and then a 'second' and 'third' from two additional members in order to be eligible for an award. You may, of course, 'fourth' and 'fifth' a member to your heart's content -- there's no such thing as too much support and affection!

Who can be NOMinated?

We only have two rules:

1. Moderators and maintainers cannot win awards. That means that [info]firesign10, [info]lalalaleigha, [info]pipisafoat, are [info]katden are ineligible to be NOMinated. NOTE: Because [info]toxic_apiaceae and [info]thorarosebird are new to our moderating team, you may NOMinate these lovely ladies for whatever you like. :)

2. You cannot NOMinate yourself.

Other than that -- anyone can be NOMinated for an award! You may NOMinate as many people as you like for a single award, and you can NOMinate the same person for multiple awards to your heart's content -- no limits!

All right, I've NOMinated. What now?

Wait for the NOMinations period to close. Shortly thereafter, a poll will arise. Vote for your favourites within the poll (and, again, sky's the limit -- vote for whomever you think is worthy!) until the winner is determined.

NOMs begin now and will continue until Friday, October 22 at noon EST.

As the NOMS come in, a list of NOMinated persons will appear here, updated fairly regularly throughout the week. It will also be kept on the website at this link. You may wish to check the list or read through the comments to make sure someone hasn't beaten you to NOMing someone -- it's easier to second/third/whatever than it is to make a fresh post!

Happy NOMing, folks!

Noming [info]keppiehed for Best Feedback. She's always commenting on my entries, and I see her commenting on almost everybody's, which is such a great feat considering the sheer amount of entries that come in each contest. She balances praise with very constructive, nicely phrased criticism, and I greatly appreciate that honesty and the support, as I'm sure many others do.

& [info]yuunaluna for Most Improved. From what I've seen, she takes feedback well and into consideration, not just for her already posted pieces, but for future work. She's not afraid to admit where she's weak and learns from mistakes as well as achievements in both her poetry and prose, and I think that's a really great feat. Each entry has gotten progressively better and better, and I always look forward to seeing what she'll turn out, be it fantasy or a poem!

Best editor:

I'd like to tack on thorarosebird for this. Not only is she efficient and very well rounded in her editing, she also makes herself available for discussion afterward should the writer need it. I think the fact that she takes the time to communicate with the writers is what makes her a fantastic editor.

Best feedback: People already beat be to keppiehed, but lemme shower a little more praise on her name. Without fail, keppie comments on everyone's entries -- and I do mean everyone. The time she dedicates not only to reading but leaving comments is staggering. On top of that, her comments are always thoughtful, tactful, and spot on. I have loads of respect for what she gets done every week. Bravo, m'dear!

So ... since keppie's already been nommed, I'd like to tack on unnameduntamed to this list. I received some feedback a while back that was ... remarkable. It came at a time where I was having some serious writing doubts, so maybe that's why it made me so happy. All I know is that unnamed's comment was incredibly uplifting and really made me feel good about what I was doing once again. Thanks for that, unnamed! *hugs*

Member's Choice: Seconding someoneingrey. I've followed Grey since getting her entry for an edit many, many moons ago, her work was that impressive. She's a wonderful poet, an incredibly creative writer, and I always look forward to what she puts out next.

Most Improved: *takes deep breath* Honestly, this is a tough one. I've been with the Flame for over a year now, not only as a competitor but as an editor as well. It always thrills me when I get to edit for someone I've had before, just to see how things have changed since the last time. I think that's the coolest thing ever. It seriously (and this is gonna sound stupid, but it's true) makes me feel proud of what we're doing here to see everyone stepping up their abilities and taking their writing to the next level. It's a remarkable thing to be part of.

So ... mushiness aside, I really have to give props to unnameduntamed, keppiehed, and and raven_tiger for NOMs this time.

Unnamed not only takes constructive commenting well, but listens and implements it. But she (sorry if you're a he, unnamed!) doesn't do it blindly. She's very good about reading the comments and selecting which ones will work for her writing and which ones won't. She's a smart cookie and I really won't be surprised if her name gets up on the list in the future.

I've been familiar with Keppie's work since she first signed onto the Flame, both as a reader and an editor. I can tell everyone now, the amount of improvement she's undergone since then is just staggering. Like, you have no idea. She's wonderfully creative and it thrills me every time I see her name in the competition pool.

Raven has also improved dramatically since the time she's been on the Flame. She's another writer where I simply cannot believe how much improvement there is. It's amazing to compare her first entries to her current ones, and it makes me feel ... really proud to see how much work she's put into her writing and getting better at it.

*dabs eyes* Okay, I'm done. Anymore and I'm gonna start crying into my cereal.

I'd like to put [info]mermaidbia up for BEST EDITOR. Not only is she one of our most thorough, knowledgeable editors, she has also made herself available to the Editing team for quite a long time. Even though she did call me a comma abuser once (totally want that on a t-shirt, by the way!), I dig her style of in depth analysis which she applies to all of her assignments.

Editors are one of our most invaluable assets here at the FLAME, so I'm going to have to give KUDOS and NOMs to [info]fawatson, and [info]silverflight8 as well. I've seen [info]fawatson on almost every list of the volunteer edits that pop up - one always ready to help out! And I think one of the newest members of the team is [info]silverflight8 - yay! For those of you who have done so or even thought about it, I'm sure you realize what an undertaking joining the Editing team is. But these folks take the challenge and give us all invaluable feed back, helping us to grasp a better understanding of word usage and grammar, as well as sometimes redirecting our energies to concepts we hadn't quite grasped in a storyline. Thank you all <3

*feels like making icons!*

Members Choice: Oldie but Goodies :D

[info]one_time_pad is one of the most amazing writers in this comm. Not afraid to dabble in styles, or splash in some humor, he's gotta be given a nod for just being ... what is it? Shadowy and enigmatic? Yeah, that's it. He is also the inspiration behind my latest project of designing and manufacturing the [info]brigits_flame Card Game. :D (I don't see him on the editing team anymore, but for those of y'all who dig the NHB edits ... you would seriously dig OTP's input.)

[info]hwango takes on subject matters and plot twists that leaves his readers going "WHOA. I would've never thought of that!" :D Rather shadowy and enigmatic himself, he also happens to be one hell of an artist, so yeah, NOMs.

Most Improved!

One that surely deserves this NOM is [info]balloonhat. A born talent, she's taking that talent by the horns lately and making delicious writing history with it! Go, blooney <3

(delicious writing history?) hmmm... *goes to have more coffee*

I'd like to NOMinate [info]belluminabyssus for Member's Choice. I know she's only been with us for a month, but let's face it, she's taken the place by storm. Not only did she win her first monthly contest, but she genuinely cares about what the other writers here at BF are doing. She is constantly leaving constructive, supportive comments on people's entries, and I she never votes without reading every single entry. I know she'll be an inspiration to us all over the upcoming months. She certainly is for me.

I'd love to vote for everyone for their all round awesome, inspirationalisingness first off lol. You are all so good.

Best editors?
Everyone who has ever edited me and ever will deserves an award for sorting my mess and helping me improve but there are a couple of people really seem to stand out for me. and are just generally quite awesome. Their edits rarely, if ever, fail to put a smile on my face because they are so sweet and patient. I'm pretty sure that in every edit from both I've learned just a little bit more - with toxic_apiaceae explaining very clearly what rules I have been missing. Brilliant.

I love everybody who comments - if I named everybody who had made my day with their comment we would be here a very long while so I'm not even going to try.

And for my member's choice?
Totally had to choose . Whether she's editing, commenting or just chatting on a chatter post she is just generally awesome. She always seems to be going above and beyond the call of duty - it's no wonder she's being snaffled by the mod team.

So there's my penny in the ring. I know all three of these guys have been mentioned before. It's no wonder because they are all amazing!

OMG! You guys are making me cry! I have been out of town, and I came back from this terrible trip to see such amazing and lovely things about me, and I just teared up. Whether I win in the polls or not doesn't matter, to see what amazing things you have all said is just so touching, I can't even tell you.

I have some noms of my own, if it isn't too late: For best editor, I would be remiss if I didn't mention [Bad username: toxic apiaceae], [info]mermaidbia, [info]fawatson and [Bad username: thorarosebird>] for most improved. Love reading her work, and I think it is getting better every week!

For best feedback, I would like to nom [info]yuunaluna and [info]belluminabyssus. They both leave thoughtful, considerate and helpful comments. They read all of my work every week, and I can see that they make a point to read many others, so I have to think that they deserve that honor!

I couldn't choose a best all-around member. I love all you guys, and everyone really steps up to the plate to help make this the best comm I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of. It's no secret that this place is dear to my heart, and opportunities for noms like this only confirm it. Thanks, mods, for continuing to do a beautiful job to make such a wonderful place to talk and grow, both as writers and as friends! <3
